HyPack Project
“a groundbreaking initiative that will establish one of Chile’s first electrolyzer assembly plants”
A new milestone in Chile’s hydrogen economy has been secured with the official award of CORFO funding for the HyPack project, a collaborative initiative to establish one of Chile’s first electrolyzer assembly plants. The project, driven by a joint effort from FastPack S.A. and Mining3, has partnered with GuoFu Hee to establish an electrolyzer factory in Chile.
Industry partners support the HyPack project, including Mining3 Chile, which acts as a technical advisor; LyA Engineering, responsible for the factory’s design and construction; and Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, which leads training efforts on hydrogen technology. The Joint Venture (JV) between FastPack and GuoFu Hee will oversee the manufacturing and design of electrolyzer systems for Chile’s growing hydrogen sector.
Through this initiative, Chile will establish local manufacturing capabilities for alkaline electrolyzers (100 kW to 5 MW) and PEM electrolyzers (50 kW to 1 MW). The facility in the Metropolitan Region will also produce auxiliary systems, enhancing Chile’s supply chain and reducing reliance on imported equipment. The total investment for the project amounts to US$10 million, with an expected workforce of 200 direct jobs and between 200 and 450 indirect jobs.
Neville Plint, CEO of Mining3, highlighted the strategic importance of this project: “With our extensive experience in promoting hydrogen use, we recognize the necessity of supporting hydrogen infrastructure development. We are dedicated to ensuring the availability and advancement of this technology, which will be crucial in driving sustainability within the mining industry.”
HyPack project is designed to promote a broad range of applications, including mobility, industrial processes, energy storage, and other emerging hydrogen-based solutions. By localizing electrolyzer manufacturing, Chile will be better positioned to integrate hydrogen into diverse economic sectors, strengthening its role in the global energy transition. Additionally, this initiative will help develop a local workforce with the technical skills needed to operate and maintain electrolyzers, ensuring long-term support for the technology. It will also reduce transportation costs for local hydrogen projects, making green hydrogen more accessible and cost-effective within the country. Furthermore, the project includes plans to collaborate with GuoFu Brazil, leveraging their expertise and capacity to support larger-scale hydrogen projects in the future.
CORFO’s support for the HyPack project is part of its broader initiative to develop a local electrolyzer manufacturing ecosystem. The agency has awarded a total of US$25.6 million to three winning projects from Chile, China, and Spain to boost the country’s hydrogen production capacity. The selected projects represent a combined investment exceeding US$50 million and are expected to create over 1,000 jobs.
“This initiative allows Chile to take a significant role in advanced engineering and manufacturing for the green hydrogen industry. By fostering local production, we are reducing dependency on foreign suppliers and creating high-value jobs and industrial linkages across the country,” stated José Miguel Benavente, Executive Vice President of CORFO.
With the launch of HyPack, FastPack and GuoFu Hee are positioning Chile as a key player in the hydrogen value chain, strengthening the country’s role as a regional leader in hydrogen production and technology development. The project will enhance the country’s industrial competitiveness while contributing to global efforts toward a cleaner energy future.
The HyPack plant is expected to be operational by mid-2026, marking a new chapter in Chile’s transition to a sustainable hydrogen economy. As the project progresses, efforts will focus on identifying partners interested in developing pilot projects utilizing the first electrolyzer Made in Chile, paving the way for larger applications and industry adoption.
